Reserved and Restricted Courses

Priority registration in many courses will be given to students who meet specified programs of study, such as admission to a degree program (including diplomas and certificates) and certain majors, minors or concentrations.

Reserves and restrictions may vary according to course section. You should check all sections of a course to determine if you are eligible to register for it.

If you change your academic program after registering, any course reserves or restrictions in effect will be enforced. When your program change is processed, your registration will be reviewed and any course section for which you do not meet course reserve or restriction requirements will be dropped from your schedule.

At the academic unit's discretion, reserved seating and course restrictions may be lifted after all undergraduate students have had the opportunity to register (see Important Dates and Deadlines for the specific date each semester). See below for a detailed explanation of how reserved and restricted courses work with waitlists.

Reserved Courses

If a course has reserved seats and you do not meet the requirements, you will be placed on the waitlist (if available).

You can check for reserved seats in the Reserves column of the Browse Classes page. This column displays available reserved, unreserved or waitlisted seats. Note: You must be signed in with your MUN login to see these details.

waitlist notification email

When reserves are lifted, waitlisted students may be offered a seat in order of their position. Check your @mun.ca email daily for a waitlist notification email. Waitlist offers expire, and you must register before the deadline in the email to claim your spot.

Restrictions

If a course has restrictions, you will not be able to add this course to your registration. If you try and register for a restricted course using the CRN you will receive one of the following errors when trying to register:

  • Campus Restriction
  • Cohort Restriction
  • Degree Restriction
  • Field of Study Restriction

To view course restrictions, use the Browse Classes menu in Student Self-Service. Search for the class and in the search results click the course name.

In the pop-up box, click the grey Restrictions button. Restrictions will be listed to the right.

You cannot waitlist for a course if you do not meet the course restrictions. If the course is set to have the restrictions lifted, return to self-service at the conclusion of undergraduate registration and see if seats are available.
