Nunatsiavut Government

Nunatsiavut, which translated into English means 鈥淥ur Beautiful Land鈥, is the homeland of the Labrador Inuit and the first Inuit region in Canada to achieve self-government. The territory includes the five Inuit communities of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet. 

Established on December 1, 2005, the Nunatsiavut Government represents over 7,000 Beneficiaries of the Constitutionally-protected Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. It has many of the responsibilities and rights of other governments, such as planning for sustainable economic development, protecting the preserving Inuit culture and implementing social programs on behalf of Beneficiaries. The government consists of seven (7) departments, namely: Education and Economic Development; Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology; Health and Social Development; Lands and Natural Resources; Language, Culture and Tourism; Nunatsiavut Affairs; and Nunatsiavut Secretariat. Today, over 500 people are employed with the Nunatsiavut Government in a variety of roles, from Community Health Workers to IT Technicians.
