  • If you are seeking to take a leave from studies, withdraw from your program or make a change in your enrollment status (ex. change from full time to part time), it is important that you understand both the academic and immigration impacts. As a condition of your study permit, you are required to actively pursue your studies. Leaves and withdrawals may be an option under exceptional circumstances. Study Permit Extensions and TRV (entry visa) Applications

If you are applying to extend your study permit  or TRV from inside Canada, you must use the  (GCKey or Sign-in Partner). Do not use the .

  • It is important that you not let your study permit expire. Your TRV is only needed to seek entry to Canada and can be expired if you do not need to enter Canada.

  • Ensure you obtain the appropriate letter (letter must include expected completion date) for study permit extension and/or TRV application

    • For TRV, you will need your transcript. You can request your transcript as per the information found here. 
  • As part of your study permit extension application, you may require a  or you may be excepted from the requirement of a PAL.
    • To determine if you met a PAL exception, see IRCC website for . If you meet a PAL exception, you will need to provide proof of PAL exception.
      • Proof of PAL exception should be a letter outlining the exemption you meet, along with additional proof (as needed). For the letter, you can edit our PAL Exception Letter Template, to your situation. Before using this template, be sure you meet a PAL exception.
      • If you are unsure if you need a PAL, connect with the Immigration Advising Team for advice.  
    • If you are a graduate student who requires a PAL, consult the webpage of the  (SGS) or email sgs@mun.ca. 
    • If you are an undergraduate student who requires a PAL, consult the webpage of the Registrar's Office or email  registrar@mun.ca. 
  • If you applied to extend your study permit prior to expiry and you remain in Canada, you have while your application is in process. Maintained status may authorize you to continue to study and work.
  • If you have not applied to extend prior to expiry, your status has expired. You may be eligible to . If this is your situation, you must stop studying and working.

    * TRV is only needed to enter Canada. It cannot be applied for at the same time as your study permit extension. You must first renew your study permit and then you can apply for a TRV from inside of Canada based on holding a valid study permit.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
  • Upon completion of your program, you may be eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).
    • Visit the IRCC website for information on the and eligibility
  • To apply for a PGWP, you will need a letter of completion. If you have been notified that you are eligible to graduate then you can request a letter to confirm this in order to apply for your PGWP
  • In addition to your letter of completion, you will also need to provide a copy of your transcript. 
  • If you have not been continuously full time throughout your program of study, it can impact PGWP eligibility. 
    • The IAT may be able to provide you with a letter to support your PGWP application to help explain a part time semester or gap in studies. To inquire, you must  for one on one consultation.
