June Kirkland-Smith is a Field Education Coordinator with the School of Social Work. She is part-time and mainly responsible for coordinating and developing field placements for undergraduate students in the community. June acts as an off-site Field Instructor, participates on ad hoc committees and is also a sessional instructor in social work practice courses.
June has spent the last 39 years working in St. John鈥檚, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) with the last 7 being at and the School of Social Work, and the previous 25 years being with NL Health Services, in a variety of coordinating and direct-practice roles. June was instrumental in implementing the Central Intake Program for Children and Youth Mental Health & Addictions. She has direct experience in working with children and families with chronic health struggles, disability, mental health, psychiatric issues, and trauma backgrounds. She has leadership in providing mentoring and training to social workers in a variety of program and service areas. Prior to working in Healthcare, June spent several years working in the community with women鈥檚 shelters, employment programs, and children鈥檚 stabilization services.
June completed both her MSW in 1994 and BSW in 1987 through 糖心视频. She was also certified in Reality Therapy Control Theory Psychology from the William Glasser Institute in 1989. June maintains her education by offering and participating in multiple in-service and educational workshops on a variety of social work topics. She has presented to several social workers, clinical, and educational staff on issues related to child and adult mental health issues and services. In 2024 she presented at the CASWE Conference her research on the presence of Occupational Stress Injury course work in national BSW curricula. She co-presented on Anxiety in Children at the NL Psychologists and Counsellor鈥檚 Association Conference in 2012, Self-Harming for the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers (NLCSW) provincial teleconference in 2017, Childhood Trauma at the Labrador Regional Wellness Coalition Conference in 2018, and Child & Adolescent Mental Health for a Canadian Association of Social Workers webinar in 2018.
Currently June sits on the executive of the NLCSW Board of Directors and was a member of the NLCSW Editorial Committee. She was the chair for the Social Work Council at Eastern Health for three years and in the past has participated on a variety of volunteer boards and committees.
