Biochemistry
The Barrowman Biochemistry Graduate Travel Awards

The income from this endowment will be used to provide a number of awards to graduate students registered in the Department of Biochemistry, so that they may present their research at relevant scientific conferences. Preference will be given to full-time students, but part-time students will also be considered. The awards will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

The Dr. Kevin Keough Graduate Scholarship in Biochemistry 

This scholarship was established by a generous donation from Dr. Kevin and Mrs. Joan Keough. It will be awarded annually to a full-time student who is in their first year of graduate studies in biochemistry. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as defined by 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Students must apply through the Department of Biochemistry. The scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Department Head, Biochemistry.

Value: $5,000

Dr. S. Ann Colbourne Graduate Scholarship in Biochemistry

The Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time graduate student in the second year of a MSc or PhD degree program in the Department of Biochemistry at 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Students will be assessed on their past research productivity and future research potential. This will be based on previous presentations, publications, and awards along with a one-page research proposal and a letter of support from their current supervisor outlining their research potential. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by the University.

Students must apply by contacting the Department of Biochemistry. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

The Dr. Patrick J.A. O鈥橠oherty Graduate Award in Biochemistry

Value at a portion of the income on the endowment it will be awarded annually to one or more full-time students enrolled in one of the M.Sc. or Doctoral programs in the Department of Biochemistry. The award is to be used to broaden awareness of biochemistry and its benefit to society. This could include funding for students to travel and share their research at relevant scientific conferences, or some other avenue that in a given year the department believes would meet this objective. In recognition of Patrick鈥檚 life journey which he faced with strength of character, preference for this award will be given to students who face challenges, such as, but not limited to, health, compromised learning abilities, speech or mobility issues, and/or financial need. Each applicant must be supported by a reference from the candidate鈥檚 supervisor that addresses how the nominated individual meets the award criteria. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a graduate award as defined by 糖心视频 University. This award will be given by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

Biology

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student pursuing graduate work at 糖心视频 University in marine and/or freshwater biology. Applicants must meet the academic requirements for a graduate scholarship. Exceptional industry and interest in the field together with academic standing will be taken into account.

Students must apply to and submit an application to the Department of Biology. The scholarship application consists of a covering letter, a one-to-two page statement of research, a CV with a list of appropriate publications or presentations, a current transcript, and two letters of reference. A recommendation will be forwarded by the Head, Department of Biology to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Earth Sciences
Dr. Alfred K. Snelgrove Graduate Scholarship in Earth Sciences 

A bequest from Dr. Alfred K. Snelgrove makes possible up to two scholarships for students applying for or enrolled in a graduate programme in the Department of Earth Sciences. These scholarships are intended primarily from Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, and are awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences. The scholarships are tenable for one year and may be renewed. They may be held in addition to other scholarships and fellowships, and will be awarded only to applicants whose academic excellence and research potential can be clearly demonstrated.

Value: $13,900 (split between two students)

Elizabeth Mounter Scholarship in Earth Sciences

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences who meets the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Preference will be given to students at the PhD level. Students must apply through the Department of Earth Sciences. Once the recipient(s) have been selected, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies. Students interested in this scholarship should connect with the Department of Earth Sciences Graduate Office.

The Dr. James A. Wright 糖心视频 Scholarship in Earth Sciences 

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student pursuing Geophysical research related to the exploration or development of onshore/offshore petroleum resources in Newfoundland and Labrador. Candidates must meet minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by 糖心视频 University and must be engaged in non-political community and/or church volunteer activities. Students must apply through and submit an application to the Department of Earth Sciences to be considered for this award. Once the recipient has been selected, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

R.F. Blackwood 糖心视频 Award in Geoscience 

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences who is undertaking field-based geoscientific research as part of their thesis research. While field-based studies are the main criteria of the award, service and contributions to the geoscience community and organizations will also be considered. The qualifying student must demonstrate strong personal values, including a strong work ethic and high personal integrity. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland.

Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Earth Sciences. This will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Earth Sciences.

Buchans Scholarship Fund of ASARCO Incorporated

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student who is a native-born Newfoundlander or a graduate of a Newfoundland high school. It can be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student if there is no suitable graduate student applicants. Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Earth Sciences to be considered for this scholarship. If awarded to a graduate student, a recommendation from the Department of Earth Sciences will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Environmental Science
CFUW Graduate Scholarship in Environmental Studies - Master's

This Scholarship was established by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) St. John's, an organization committed to promoting equality for women and girls. A Scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Environmental Science who identifies as a woman, and who is enrolled full-time in the masters or doctoral program in Environmental Science at 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Preference will be given to a student who has graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador. The recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements.

Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Environmental Science. Please check with the Department of Environmental Science for the internal deadline. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Environmental Science.

Canadian Beverage Association Graduate Environmental Science Scholarship 

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in either the Master of Environmental Science, Master of Science (Environmental Science), or Ph.D. (Environmental Science) programs in the Faculty of Science. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship.

Students must apply and submit an application consisting of a covering letter, a one page statement of research, a CV, two letters of reference and a current transcript to the Office of the Dean of Science. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Mathematics and Statistics
The Shaun C. Hillier 糖心视频 Scholarship 

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, it will be awarded annually to a full-time graduate student who has completed a M.Sc. thesis in Scientific Computing or Mathematics & Statistics with a strong scientific computing component. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship and be recommended by their thesis supervisor.

Once the recipient has been selected, a recommendation from the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Chair of the Scientific Computing Program will be forwarded to the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies to be awarded.

Ocean Sciences
J. Roger Pearson Graduate Award

The J. Roger Pearson Graduate Award was established by Ocean Learning Partnership Inc. to honor and recognize Mr. J. Roger Pearson, founding director of the Oceans Learning Partnership (OLP). Under Mr. Pearson鈥檚 leadership, OLP and 糖心视频 University signed an MOU in 2013 and inaugurated a new experiential learning program for high school students at the Ocean Sciences Centre, the Marine Biodiversity Lab Program, among others, as part of the University鈥檚 newly launched outreach and engagement strategy. Mr. Pearson has a long, distinguished record as an educator and innovator. He was instrumental in establishing MI International as an entity to engage the expertise of the Marine Institute in marine education and coastal community development opportunities worldwide. He was previously Head of the School of Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding at the former College of Fisheries. Following his tenure at MI International, Mr. Pearson assumed the key role in numerous education projects internationally as an Education Sector Staff Consultant for the World Bank in the Middle East, North Africa Region.

One or more 60-hour graduate assistantship awards will be granted to full-time graduate students whose focus of study is in marine biology or ocean sciences in the Department of Ocean Sciences at 糖心视频 University. The value and number of awards to be granted annually will be determined by the Head, Department of Ocean Sciences. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University. The award will be granted by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Ocean Sciences.

An application for the J. Roger Pearson Award should include the following:

  1. A current CV
  2. A cover letter addressing the commitment of the applicant to outreach and engagement activities
  3. A letter (or e-mail) of support from the student鈥檚 supervisor
Leo Browne 糖心视频 Award

This award was established by Lisa Browne and Tim Hollett in memory of Lisa's twin brother and in recognition of the joy that diving and the ocean gave Leo. Valued at $1,000 annually, it will be granted to a full-time graduate student beyond their first year of study in the area of aquatic ecology at 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Preference will be given to students in the Department of Ocean Sciences whose research program involves scientific diving. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University.

To be considered for this award, students must submit an application to the Department of Ocean Sciences. Please check with the Department of Ocean Sciences for their internal deadline. The award will be granted by the Deputy Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Ocean Sciences.

Dr. Joe Brown Graduate Research Award in Aquatic Ecology and Aquaculture

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student who is in the second or subsequent year of study in the areas of aquatic ecology or aquaculture. Will be awarded on the basis of scholarly merit and quality of research. Students must apply through and submit an application to the Department of Ocean Sciences. A recommendation from the Head of the Department of Ocean Sciences will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Physics and Physical Oceanography
The J. Bruce and Helen H. French Graduate Scholarship in Physics

Awarded annually to a full-time female graduate student in the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography on the basis of excellence in both course work and research. If, in a particular year, a qualified female student is not available, the scholarship may be awarded to a male student who meets the other conditions. Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography. This scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography.

The Gordon Mertz 糖心视频 Fellowship in Physical Oceanography  

Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student working in the area of Physical Oceanography with applications in Fisheries Oceanography or Marine Ecology. Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Physics & Physical Oceanography. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Allan R. Stein Graduate Scholarship in Science

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in the Faculty of Science whose project is focused on the environment with preference for a project focused on climate change. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Students must apply to the Faculty of Science to be considered for this scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Science. The scholarship application to submit consists of a covering letter, a one page statement of research, a CV, a current transcript and two letters of reference.

Miller Graduate Scholarship in Geophysics and Physical Oceanography 

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student, in any year of their program, who is studying Geophysics or Physical Oceanography at 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. Preference will be given to a student who completed an undergraduate degree at 糖心视频 University. In the event there is no student pursuing any of the before mentioned graduate disciplines, the scholarship may be awarded to a student pursuing full-time graduate studies in Physics or Applied Mathematics, with preference given to a student who completed their undergraduate degree at 糖心视频 University. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University. To apply, please contact the Faculty of Science. Once a recipient has been selected, this scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Science.

The Weston Family Graduate Scholarships

Awarded annually to a recipient in the field of Marine Biology and a recipient in the field of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. Candidates must have been born in one of the Atlantic Provinces and are currently registered as full-time graduate students. This scholarship is not renewable. Students must apply and submit an application to the appropriate academic unit. These scholarships will be awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon recommendation from the Dean, Faculty of Science and Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. The recommendation will be forwarded to the School of Graduate Studies. Please check with your academic unit for their internal deadline date.

Canadian Beverage Association Graduate Scholarship in Environmental Science

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in either the Master of Environmental Science, Master of Science (Environmental Science), or Ph.D. (Environmental Science) programs in the Faculty of Science. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship. Students must apply and submit an application consisting of a covering letter, a one page statement of research, a CV, two letters of reference and a current transcript to the Office of the Dean of Science. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Samit & Reshma Sharma Graduate Scholarship in Geology and Geophysics

This scholarship was established by a generous donation from the Samit & Reshma Sharma Foundation to celebrate the unparalleled cross-section of geology in proximity to Atlantic ocean bed that can be studied in Newfoundland and Labrador spanning a large part of Earth's history. Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, it will be awarded annually to a full-time thesis or major project-based graduate student in geology, geophysics or a related field, whose work will enhance societal knowledge of world class earth and marine geology in mitigating hazards, and which promotes sustainable development. Preference will first be given to students of geology and geophysics, although candidates from related, relevant fields may be eligible. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland. To apply, students will need to submit an application to the Faculty of Science. Please contact the Faculty of Science for their internal deadline. Students are required to submit their application as one application package in a single PDF document in the following order: (1) Cover Letter, (2) One page Research Statement, (3) CV, (4) Two Letters of Reference, and (5) Current Transcript. This scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Science.
