Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student whose area of study is the English language of Newfoundland and Labrador. To be eligible, applicants must have scholarship standing. If no suitable candidate can be found in a given year, the scholarship may be withheld or awarded to a student studying one of Newfoundland and Labrador's non-English languages.

Students must apply through and submit an application to the office of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to be considered for the scholarship. An application consist of a cover letter of no more than 300 words outlining student's scholarly contributions to the subject area, a curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, and a reference letter from the applicant's supervisor or other suitable faculty mentor. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Awarded annually to a graduate student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences who is utilizing materials from local Newfoundland and Labrador archival agencies, museums and/or libraries to complete their program. Preference will be given to a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador who demonstrates the aspiration to pursue a career in the field of Newfoundland and Labrador heritage. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University. An application is required and is available through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students will need to apply by application through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This award will be granted by the Deputy Provost and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Awarded annually to full-time master's and doctoral students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to assist them to travel to other countries for the purpose of thesis research and thesis-related study. Awards will be based on academic standing; in some cases, financial need may also be considered.

Students must apply and submit an application form, a current transcript and an optional letter from your supervisor stating anticipated benefits to student receiving this award to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Office, A-5015. Application forms are available from the School of Graduate Studies by emailing Tammy Power-Taylor (gradawards@mun.ca). When awarded to graduate students, a recommendation from the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is forwarded to the Dean, School of Graduate Studies.

This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences pursuing academic work in LGBTQ2S+ studies, or who is actively involved in LGBTQ2S+ matters, or have a demonstrated commitment, either through previous academic endeavor or through community involvement, to the advancement of knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ2S+ lives, history, and issues, which may include human rights issues and policy development that positively affect LGBTQ2S+ people. This scholarship will be rotated annually between undergraduate and graduate students. When awarded to an undergraduate student, preference will be given to those who have completed at least one year of study. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University. Applications are available through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Eligible applicants will be assessed on both their academic achievement, and the quality and impact of their work (whether academic or community involvement) in advancing understanding of, and contributions to, LGBTQ2S+ communities. In the case of an undergraduate recipient, the scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards and in the case of a graduate recipient, the scholarship will be awarded by Deputy Provost and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, both acting on the recommendation of the Dean, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Awarded on the basis of scholarship standing to a student whose studies and accomplishments most closely support the aims of the Newfoundland St. Andrew's Society; to foster and encourage the love of Scotland, its history, literature, music and national games in a Newfoundland context. It can be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student.

Students must apply and submit an application to the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences to be considered for the scholarship. To apply, students can email (as a PDF document - include your MUN student number) a summary of how your studies and accomplishments support the Society's goal of fostering the love of Scotland, its history, literature, music and national games in a Newfoundland context to renee@mun.ca. If awarded to a graduate student, it will be awarded by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies upon the basis of a recommendation from the Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.

English

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student starting a Master's program in the Department of English, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. Students must contact the Department of English regarding the application process. Once the recipient has been selected, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies.

Value: $1,000

Awarded annually to two full-time students in the Department of English Language and Literature. One award will be given to a student enrolled in the MA program and one to a student enrolled in the PhD program. The recipients must have completed both the final examination process and a thesis that demonstrates the following: originality of an idea, clear and effective presentation, a high quality of writing, and a significant contribution to the field of study examined in the thesis. The recipients must also meet the minimum academic requirements for an award. Students must be nominated for this award to the Department of English Language and Literature. The awards will be granted by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department of English Language and Literature.

Value: $3,000 ($1,000 to MA student, $2,000 to PhD student)

This Scholarship was established by a generous bequest from Dr. Gordon Jones, Professor Emeritus, who along with his beloved wife Helen, were essential builders of the English Department at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. Gordon left his native Britain in 1964 to live in St. John's where he met Helen Ball in a production of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood and they were married in 1970. Both were highly respected and dedicated teachers of English Studies and active in the the theatre community at both the provincial and national level.

Valued at a portion of the income on the endowment, the Scholarship will be granted annually to a full-time student enrolled in graduate studies in the Department of English, and who achieves the highest-grade average in the program in any academic year. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. Students must contact the Department of English to apply for this Scholarship. This Scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of English.

Awarded annually to support full-time graduate students in Philosophy at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University who are pursuing supervised theoretical or applied, qualitative or quantitative public policy research relating to political and ethical issues in Newfoundland and Labrador. It will be awarded on the basis of scholarly merit and quality of research. If the Head of the Department of Philosophy finds that in a given year no such candidate meets the criteria the Head shall make a recommendation, in consultation with the Director of the Harris Centre, to choose from amongst appropriate candidates in any faculty who have a study focus on public policy or regional development in Newfoundland and Labrador. Students must contact the Department of Philosophy regarding the application process. Once the recipient has been selected, the recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Doris M. Babstock ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time student entering the Master of Science in Experimental Psychology program at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University. Preference will be given to a Behavioural Neuroscience student who has taken a non-standard path during their academic career. The scholarship will be based primarily on academic merit, and is renewable for a second year provided the student continues in the program. Preference will be given to a student who is not already in receipt of a large source of funding. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. This scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Provost and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Psychology.

Students must apply through the Department of Psychology. A recommendation will be forwarded by the Head, Department of Psychology.

Political Science

The Barney Powers Award in Political Science 

This Scholarship was established by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) St. John's, an organization committed to promoting equality for women and girls. A Scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Gender Studies who identifies as a woman, and who is enrolled full-time in any masters or doctoral program in Gender Studies at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. Preference will be given to a student who has graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador. The recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements.

Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Gender Studies. Please check with the Department of Gender Studies for the internal deadline.

Archaeology

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student working in the field of historical archaeology in Newfoundland and Labrador. Preference will be given to students researching the early modern fishery. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. Students must apply through the Department of Archaeology. The scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Archaeology.

Jeffrey Speller ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ Award

Awarded annually to full-time graduate students (Masters and Doctoral), either as an individual or as teams applying for allotments, to support field research as part of their degree requirements. In cases in which a student conducts field research that is attached to the research work of a faculty member or another graduate student (of ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ or another institution), funds granted shall be applied only to the expenses incurred by the grantee, not to the expenses normally charged to a faculty member's (or other graduate student's) research grant. Thus, in cases where travel, accommodation, food, is shared, and where other sources of research support are lacking, a reasonable fraction of the total expenses incurred during the field research may be covered under the allowable expenses of the award. If the yearly funds available for field research are greater than the demand in a given year, the surplus funds may be used to support travel costs for full-time graduate students to attend conferences and/or to present research findings.

Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Geography. Once the recipient (s) have been decided, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Joyce C. Macpherson Graduate Research Award in Physical Geography 

A minimum of two awards will be given each year to fund costs related to national/international travel for the accomplishment of, or the presentation of, folklore research by students in the graduate program in folklore at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland. The awards, given on the basis of scholarly merit combined with the quality of a research proposal or conference paper abstract, may vary in value according to the travel to be undertaken. Students must apply through and submit an application to the Department of Folklore. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Deputy Provost and Dean, School of Graduate Studies.

Awarded annually to a full-time student in the MA or PhD program in folklore to fund costs relating to national/international travel for the presentation of folklore research utilizing the Herbert Halpert Collection and/or any other collection housed in MUNFLA. It will be awarded on the basis of scholarly merit and the opportunity to promote ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University's Department of Folklore and its collections as widely as possible. Students must apply through and submit an application to the Department of Folklore. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies

This award will be awarded annually to a graduate student in the Folklore program at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University to help with costs related to travel to the American Folklore Society Meetings for presentation of research in any of Dr. Goldstein's many areas of specialization. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the university. It will be given on the basis of scholarly merit combined with the quality of the conference paper abstract. Please contact the Department of Folklore regarding the selection process. Once a recipient has been selected, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Awarded annually to either one or two graduate students in the Department of Folklore at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University. This award is designed to fund costs related to the accomplishment of, or the presentation of, research on the traditonal performing arts in Newfoundland, including song, dance, drama, or narrative and/or the cultural traditions of the Newfoundland fishery. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated academic merit and a reserach proposal or conference paper abstract demonstrating original, creative and innovative thought. Students must apply and submit an application to the Department of Folklore. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of Graduate Studies.
