Busy student juggles studies and parenting to reach her goal

Deanne Smith walks softly and carries a big yoga ball鈥

Not literally of course 鈥 it鈥檚 hard to stuff a giant yoga ball into her backpack.

But Deanne鈥檚 background as a fitness instructor and personal trainer helped her juggle life as a nursing student in the School of Nursing鈥檚 (SON) demanding fast-track bachelor of nursing (BN) program, while finishing up a master鈥檚 in kinesiology, and parenting two young children.

鈥淔itness helped save me,鈥 said Deanne, who has degrees in kinesiology and physical education (2003) from 糖心视频. 鈥淚t was good for my head, for my heart and my soul.鈥

Other life-saving credits go to her family, for providing the child care support she needed to complete her programs and become a registered nurse.

鈥淭hey were so fabulous,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey took my children everywhere. Without them I could never have accomplished this.鈥

But why put herself through such a grueling pace?

鈥淚 had found a niche with training and personal fitness instructing but I felt that I wasn鈥檛 completely doing my job鈥aring for people the way I wanted,鈥 she said.

鈥淚 really love to learn, and I wanted to be the best I could be at what I was doing.鈥

Deanne鈥檚 children were the motivating force in her life, giving her the drive she needed to work hard. She wanted to better herself for them.

It was while working as a teaching assistant in the SON鈥檚 anatomy lab that it came to her: a career in nursing would allow her to use all of her background experience in a holistic way.

So she applied for the BN program (fast-track) program, convinced that she could handle the demands of her nursing program with completing her master鈥檚 in kinesiology.

Deanne received her master鈥檚 degree at the spring convocation of 2013.

But there was hardly time to celebrate the accomplishment as she was busy with her nursing program.

鈥淚鈥檝e had an amazing experience at the school,鈥 said Deanne who says the structure of the fast-track program made her feel like a nurse pretty quickly.

鈥淚 liked that I was learning and doing practical components simultaneously.  I鈥檝e had fabulous clinical instructors and preceptors (nurses who serve as mentors) and great experiences on each of the floors I鈥檝e gone to. I鈥檝e really been fortunate.鈥

Deanne is putting her education to work at St. Clare鈥檚 Hospital, on a medical-surgical floor where she did one of her clinical rotations.

She hopes that her story will encourage others in similar circumstances.

"Just keep plugging away,鈥 she urges.
