S. Rossignol

Sébastien Rossignol (MUN) and Anna Adamska (Utrecht) have recently co-edited a book of social and cultural history devoted to medieval charters from several areas of East Central Europe. The contributions focus on the formulary, with specific emphasis on the preambles, of the documents issued on behalf of rulers, of archbishops, and of nobles. Particular attention is paid to the genesis and significance of the formulae, as well as to the rationale for their inclusion, and to the role of scribes, notaries, and their use of formulary handbooks in devising them. The results of this research are discussed in the context of current scholarship on literacy and communication.
