Fair Trade Campus
ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University is proud to be Fair Trade Certified
Fair Trade Campus status is granted by Fairtrade Canada and the Canadian Fair Trade Network of universities and colleges that make a commitment to supporting – and educating their campus communities about – fair trade. ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University has been a fair trade-certified campus since 2016 and continues to hold its certification for 2024/2025. Each year ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University builds upon its work to engage the community on fair trade initiatives.
Fairtrade standards include social, economic, and environmental requirements, and prohibit child labour and forced labour in the harvesting, production and manufacturing of goods. Fairtrade standards encourage continuous improvement of developing farmers’ organizations and the living and working conditions of estate workers.
ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ’s fair trade status is the result of a collaboration between students, faculty and staff. The committee consists of members from Engineers without Boarders (EWB), Ancillary Operations, Sustainability Office, ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland Faculty Association, ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University of Newfoundland Student’s Union, ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ University Graduate Student's Union and the St. John’s campus food services contractor, Lighthouse Hospitality by Aramark.
Fair Trade Coffee can be purchased at various on-campus dining locations including R. Gushue Hall, The Jumping Bean Café in the Library, and Cafe Depot. In addition to this on-campus dining locations provide Fairtrade certified chocolate.
