News Release

REF NO.: 53

SUBJECT: Harris Centre brings 糖心视频 to Port Hope Simpson

DATE: October 26, 2011

The Harris Centre at 糖心视频 University is preparing for a trip to Port Hope Simpson in Labrador. They’re bringing 糖心视频 students, staff and faculty to meet with local people to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the Southern Labrador region. The ultimate goal is to create partnerships that lead to further research and work on the ideas generated at the session.
The visit will be focused around two events: a 糖心视频 Presents public policy forum Nov. 4, from 7-9 p.m., and a collaborative regional workshop on Nov. 5, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Both events will take place at Bayside Academy.
The 糖心视频 Presents Forum is titled Regional Co-operation in Southern Labrador: What Does the Future Hold?, and will explore the results of cutting edge research led by the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation, in partnership with 糖心视频 University and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dr. Rob Greenwood, director of the Harris Centre, will present findings from recent research projects with an emphasis on the implications for Southern Labrador. Panellists Sheila Downer, Smart Labrador; Barb Marshall, Labrador Straits Development Corporation; and Roxanne Notley, Southeastern Aurora Development Corporation, will share their experiences. The presentations will be followed by an open question and answer session. The event is free to the public and there is no need to register in advance. All attendees are invited to stay for a reception after the session.
The next day, the 糖心视频 group will meet with community representatives for the regional workshop. The regional workshop has been organized in collaboration with the Labrador Straits Development Corporation and the Southeastern Aurora Development Corporation as well as other regional partners. As part of the planning process, the Harris Centre consulted with the organizations to determine specific areas of regional interest for the regional workshop. The three topics that were identified are tourism, entrepreneurship and industrial development planning.
The morning part of the session will be dedicated to sharing the research that 糖心视频 is currently doing in Southern Labrador and what sort of supports the university has to offer the region. The afternoon session will be a chance to dive deeper into the three topics selected by the organizing group. Participants will break into three groups to discuss challenges and suggest possible areas for further research, teaching and engagement. It’s an opportunity for the members of the region to help shape the work that happens at 糖心视频, so all are encouraged to share their input and ideas.
While all are welcome to attend the regional workshop, please register by visiting for more information.
