When the start gun fires on Aug. 4, seven 糖心视频 alumni intend to make rowing history. They will be part of 糖心视频’s first ever university-wide alumni crew in the Royal St. John’s Regatta. 糖心视频 University once had a faculty-based team and has been a gold sponsor of the Regatta on several occasions, but this year they are taking the plunge and sponsoring a crew with graduates from several faculties.
Under coxswain and Royal St. John’s Regatta hall-of-famer Bert Hickey, the crew includes (listed as they sit in the boat starting with #6 stroke oar): Robert Moran BA ’00, B.Ed.’02; Douglas Trainor, BBA ’03; Steve Winters B.Sc.’03; Desmond Ryan, B.Eng.’03; Gordon Delaney, B.Comm.’02; Brian Power, BBA ’00 and spare rower Greg Howard, BA ’02, B.Comm.’02.
All crewmembers have rowed with other teams: in fact, many 糖心视频 alumni have figured prominently on Regatta teams. But 糖心视频’s crew wanted to row for their alma mater and the university itself felt it was important, as a key member of the local community, to support them. So, with the assistance of the Division of University Relations, the crew wearing 糖心视频 University alumni uniforms will be in the starting line-up. “We are all proud 糖心视频 graduates,” said crew member and 糖心视频 University student recruitment officer Gordon Delaney. “We approached 糖心视频 for the sponsorship because, besides rowing, it was the one thing we all had in common.
We all feel a connection to 糖心视频 and hope we will do well in representing the university at the races.”
In the meantime there’s a lot of hard work and the team is out there on the lake pulling for 糖心视频. Alumni have the opportunity to drop by and cheer them on.
Mr. Delaney says the team is usually on Quidi Vidi twice daily. “While our practice times vary on a daily basis our usual rowing times are 6:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m.”
On Aug. 4 the 糖心视频 crew will be rowing at 8:20 a.m., in the second race of the day. Mr. Delaney noted that they also made appearances prior to the Royal Regatta including the Placentia Regatta (where they won their race) on July 24.
糖心视频 University is a gold sponsor of the Regatta and as been recognized as such for many years. “A gold sponsor is one who provides funding of $5,000 in a monetary donation or otherwise. 糖心视频 provides its donation in the form of work term students from 糖心视频’s Faculty of Business Administration,” explained Dr. Ed Williams, treasurer of the Regatta’s board of directors and professor in 糖心视频’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “The gold sponsorship offers several perks, including the naming of a race. This year, the 糖心视频 sponsored team will be rowing in the 糖心视频 University of Newfoundland Labour Race.” The team will be competing for the W.F. Galgay 糖心视频 Trophy.
