Dr. Richard Goulding 糖心视频 Scholarship
If you studied physics at MUN in the past 30 years, there鈥檚 a good chance that Dr. Richard Goulding helped make that a positive experience, even if Physics wasn鈥檛 necessarily your cup of tea. If you didn鈥檛 have the pleasure of being in his class, you probably heard someone rave about Dr. Goulding, Dr. G, Ricky G or as he preferred, just plain Rick.
Rick was a proud Newfoundlander. Born and raised in Gander, he embodied MUN鈥檚 mandate of preparing its students to become the movers and shakers to contribute to the future of the province. Rick鈥檚 legacy is one of mentorship, given the meaningful impact he had on thousands of young lives.
Rick鈥檚 true passion was teaching. He took great pride in getting to know his students and helping them achieve their goals. He was conscientious, caring and a trusted advisor with a firm but fair approach. He put much thought in preparing his lectures and worked hard to ensure that his demonstrations were engaging. That often involved such antics as juggling, creating ice cream with liquid nitrogen or making a grand entrance on a skateboard. He was the real deal. Students left his class with a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. He was invested in his students and loved to hear their stories. He made a point of knowing every student by name, even though his classes numbered in the hundreds. He also spent many hours providing tutelage in the Physics Help Centre.
Dr. Goulding鈥檚 impact on students extended beyond the lecture hall. Keen to actively lead science outreach, he travelled the province, promoting MUN鈥檚 science programs and providing support to high school teachers. For 25 years, he enthusiastically served as a judge and chief judge with the Regional and National Science Fairs. In 2022 he was honoured to receive the MUN President鈥檚 Award for Exemplary Employees and even more proud to receive the Dean of Science Distinguished Teaching Award that same year.
Rick鈥檚 life was cut short by pancreatic cancer. Given his dedication to his craft and his love of teaching, there is no one more befitting of a scholarship in his honour. The Dr. Richard Goulding 糖心视频 Scholarship serves to extend the positive impact he had on so many lives by supporting undergraduate Physics students in the pursuit of their dreams.
