The Music of Our Burnished Axes: A Book Launch and Exhibit
鈥淭he Music of Our Burnished Axes鈥 is the first comprehensive collection of musical compositions, recitations, poems, and narratives written by, for, and about twentieth-century woods workers in Newfoundland and Labrador. It analyzes their significance 鈥 as both grassroots social history texts and creative and musical contributions 鈥 and creates a portrait of a culture shaped by the harvesting of timber. The Exhibit: 鈥淪ongs and Stories of 鈥楾he Forgotten Service鈥欌 recalls the experiences, contributions, and legacies of the Newfoundland overseas foresters of the First and Second World Wars. The exhibit includes archival photographs, audiovisual material, and text. Interactive technologies enable the audience to explore songs, recitations, and stories written and performed by the foresters.
